Washougal School District forecasts that enrollment will increase

The Washougal School District is projecting an enrollment of 2,992 students for the upcoming school year, 214 more than it had at the end the 2020-21 school year.

District financial manager Kris Grindy revealed the projection as part of a presentation on the district’s 2021-22 budget, which was subsequently adopted by the Washougal School Board, during an Aug. 24 meeting.

Judge bans protests within mile of Vancouver Public Schools sites

A Clark County Superior Court judge granted an injunction Tuesday prohibiting protests, rallies or other demonstrations that “disrupt educational services” within one mile of Vancouver schools.

Prairie High School Drama Club students perform beyond the end of the year

BATTLE GROUND — Prairie High School Drama Club students gave it their all to put together a play, “Drama’s Rotten Showcase,” in a short amount of time, as students returned for hybrid online and in-person instruction earlier this year.

“We tried to approach this in a very low-stress way,” drama teacher Claire Verity said in a news release. “We tried to make it as minimal as possible, but still as polished as possible.”

Ridgefield students learn about STEM during carnival

RIDGEFIELD — South Ridge Elementary School teachers Chelsea Tipton and Jennifer Stinson worked together to host an end-of-year carnival that featured games designed, tested and built by students to promote learning about STEM subjects.

Students designed and researched their own carnival games, including concepts like rolling, spinning, throwing and pushing to achieve motion for objects like beanbags, balls and marshmallows.

Students to have access to fresh produce for cooking classes

WASHOUGAL — Students in the Introduction to Culinary and Advanced Culinary classes at Washougal High School will have access to locally harvested produce raised on school grounds to use in their cooking classrooms next fall. Community member Nicole King offered up the starts that couldn’t fit in her garden.

Battle Ground Public Schools to see administrative changes

Battle Ground Public Schools has announced the following administrative changes for the 2021-22 school year:

Denny Waters, current deputy superintendent, will become superintendent July 1. He succeeds Mark Ross, who retires June 30. Shelly Whitten, current assistant superintendent in charge of human resources, will become deputy superintendent.

Michelle Reinhardt, current director of human resources, becomes the new executive director of human resources.

Stephanie Watts, principal of Prairie High School, joins the district office as director of human resources. Susannah Woehr, previously assistant principal at Renton High School, is Prairie’s new principal.

Michelle Scott, previously director of business services in the Hockinson School District, joins Battle Ground as its new chief financial officer. Scott succeeds Meagan Hayden, who is relocating outside the area.

Krishna Smith, assistant principal at Pleasant Valley Middle School, takes over as principal of Daybreak Primary School. Smith succeeds Gerald Gabbard, who took a job outside of the district. – source
